Thandi friends - nurturing love

Thandi Friends Project was set up in 2005 by Alan & Chris Clowes to relieve poverty, hardship and distress and advance education particularly – but not exclusively – among the Thandi community in the Republic of South Africa by the provision of financial and material assistance, vocational and skills training in management and business and by such other means as the trustees shall determine with the object of improving their conditions of life.

Where is Thandi?

Our disadvantaged community is in the beautiful Elgin Valley in South Africa, an hour east of Cape Town. It is situated about a mile down a dirt track off the N2 trunk road.

What is Thandi?

"Thandi" is a Xhosa word meaning "Nurturing Love".
Volunteers and donors from the UK work to support the disadvantaged community around the village of Lebanon and the town of Grabouw. We have supported the local hospital – particularly by providing clothes and toiletries for newborns and their mums, and the local school by providing food and books.

The 'jewel in our crown' is the Thandi Lebanon Creche which provides high quality care and education to the smallest children in Lebanon Village and enables their parents to work.
